Forgot the birth time? What you can and cannot match without it — and the smart workarounds families actually use.
"The boy's family doesn't know his birth time. Should we drop the match?" No. In forty years of reading charts for matchmaking, I have seen hundreds of successful matches checked without a clock-time — and dozens of failed ones checked with the exact second recorded. Here is how to think clearly when the time is missing.
The birth time sets the ascendant (lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Everything in the chart is anchored to it: houses, the Moon's exact degree, dasha balance. Change the time by two hours and you may change the ascendant entirely.
But kundli matching rests on the Moon far more than on the lagna. The 36-guna Ashtakoot system compares the two Moons: their nakshatras, their signs, their lords. And the Moon moves slowly enough that even a rough "born in the morning" memory usually keeps the same nakshatra.
That is 31 of 36 gunas checkable from birth dates alone. The time-sensitive residue (Graha Maitri's finer points, and confirmation of the dasha picture) is real but not decisive.
Three situations genuinely need the time:
When time is unknown, serious practitioners use birth-time rectification: working backwards from life events (siblings' births, education milestones, parents' charts) to narrow the lagna. It is an art, but a well-practised one.
The practical path most families take: match on the Moon-based 31 gunas, treat a high score with confidence, and only invest in rectification if the match is otherwise excellent and both families want the extra certainty.
Is guna milan without time accurate?
For the Moon-based kootas — yes, usually within a day. The tool flags charts where the Moon changed nakshatra during the date.
Can Manglik dosha be checked without time?
Partially: Mars from the Moon is checkable; Mars from lagna needs rectification.
What if only one partner knows the time?
Very common. Match the Moon systems fully, and treat the timed chart's lagna-specific factors as secondary considerations.
Our 36-guna matching calculator works with birth dates — it computes the Moon-based gunas instantly and warns you when the Moon's sign boundary makes the result uncertain.
