Why the first syllable of your baby's name comes from the birth nakshatra, complete syllable tables for all 27 nakshatras, and how to use them.

In Indian families, a baby's name is not chosen — it is discovered. Long before the horoscope is read for career and marriage, it is read for one immediate question: which syllable should the child's name begin with?
Each of the 27 nakshatras owns four syllables (padas), one for each quarter of the nakshatra's 13°20′ span. The nakshatra occupying the Moon's position at birth sets the child's sound signature — the vibration the family wraps around the child from day one.
Tradition holds that starting the name with the birth-pada syllable aligns the name's vibration with the child's lunar nature. Modern parents treat this as one beautiful input among many — and it remains one of the most requested calculations in any jyotishi's practice.

Many families also weigh the name number in numerology: a syllable that pleases the ear AND harmonizes with the birth date is the classical ideal. Our numerology calculator can check the final name's vibration in seconds.
Do I need the exact birth time?
For the nakshatra, usually the birth date is enough (the Moon stays in one nakshatra ~24 hours). The exact time refines the pada — the specific syllable.
What if I don't like any name with that syllable?
Tradition offers flexibility: some accept the syllable anywhere in the name, others use a nickname with the syllable while the formal name is free. Sound and intention matter more than rigid rules.
Is this only for Hindus?
The nakshatra system belongs to the shared Vedic heritage; families of any tradition use it as a beautiful naming compass.
