Western astrology uses the sun sign; Vedic astrology looks first at the Moon — its sign (chandrarashi) and its nakshatra.
The zodiac is divided into 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′ each. Your birth nakshatra is where the Moon sat at your birth moment. It shapes your mind, instincts and dasha sequence.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac anchored to fixed stars, while the West uses the tropical zodiac tied to seasons. The difference is about 24 degrees — so a Western Taurus may be a Vedic Aries.
